Independence 2001 messsage from the Jamaican High Commissioner to the UK,

His Excellency the Hon. David Muirhead, OJ CD QC

Our annual Independence celebrations provide us with a welcome opportunity to reflect on the achievements of our nation and our people. It is also a time to strengthen our resolve to work even harder for the advancement of the country we are delighted to call home.

After 39 years as an Independent nation, there is much of which Jamaicans can be proud. Our island continues to be regarded worldwide as one of the most beautiful places on earth. Our multi-cultural mosaic is a fine example of people from different backgrounds living in harmony with each other and is a true reflection of our national motto, 'Out of Many, One People'.

We have established ourselves on the world stage through the abilities and talents of our athletes, musicians, scholars, artists, writers and other professionals. We are a country with a proud record in the finest democratic traditions and institutions.

Over the years through concerted national action, we have recorded significant advancement in education, health and human development and indeed now boast one of the fastest growing information technology sectors in the Caribbean region.

The challenges that have confronted our nation, have been real and testing. In an international economic climate, which has been hostile to small island developing states, Jamaica has been modernising its productive capacity and restructuring its economy. There is every indication that with the economic fundamentals now firmly in place, the country is poised for sustained economic growth and further development of our people.

In these fast-changing times, we will have to continuously equip ourselves to take on the increasing challenges of a competitive world. We have to be prepared to continue to struggle valiantly to overcome the remaining challenges to our economy and our society.

I believe that Jamaicans have learned well from the past and I am sure that our achievements will fortify us to approach the future with sound plans great hope and immense confidence.

I wish all Jamaicans-at home and abroad-an enjoyable, peaceful and safe Independence Day.
